Job Description

Food Service Specialist - Regular Part-Time

Assist in planning and implementing a comprehensive food service program compliant with USDA Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) policies and procedures. This Regular Part-Time position requires a minimum of 20 hours per week and is eligible for benefits. Location: Fort Meade, MD area.

  • Duties Include:
  • Applying knowledge and skills to assist in planning and implementing a comprehensive food service program.
  • Performing a variety of food preparation and cooking tasks, including cleaning, paring, peeling, slicing, dicing; grilling, frying, baking, broiling, pouring liquids, and mixing ingredients.
  • Preparing and cooking a variety of more complex foods (meats, poultry, seafood, vegetables, stews, casseroles, gravies, sauces, and baked goods) following standard recipes.
  • Working with Food and Nutrition Specialists to prepare menus and submit food orders and purchase requests.
  • Assisting with "on-the-job training" of other kitchen staff members and consulting with youth cooking clubs/health and fitness programs, as required.
  • Adhering to risk management procedures.
  • Requirements:
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Direct Deposit and Social Security Card required.
  • Meet qualification, eligibility, physical, and background requirements for this position.
  • Current health assessment documenting good mental and physical health, freedom from communicable disease, and required immunizations in accordance with current Army and DoD policy, including annual influenza vaccinations.
  • Possible one-year probationary period (initially or upon conversion, if applicable).
  • Successful completion of annual training requirements and demonstrated on-the-job competence.
  • May be subject to irregular hours, evenings, and/or weekends.
  • Successful completion of an employment verification (E-Verify) check.
  • Ability to work Monday-Friday, some weekends and evenings, and any time between 0600 and 1800.
  • Work involves continual standing and walking, frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, and bending.
  • Work is performed in kitchen areas, often hot and noisy, and exposed to steam, fumes, cooking odors, and temperature changes (walk-in refrigerators/freezing units).
  • Able to lift or move objects up to 40 pounds unassisted, and occasionally lift or move objects weighing over 40 pounds with assistance.
  • Able to work on tile floors, and be aware of potential for burns, cuts, bruises, or slipping.
  • Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 6 months of work experience directly related to the duties described, including experience with professional kitchen appliances and equipment.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing in English.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 40 lbs. routinely.
  • Highly Preferred Qualifications:
  • 2 years of experience working in a commercial kitchen.
  • Current ServSafe certification.
  • Candidates meeting minimum qualifications with these highly preferred criteria will be prioritized. Proof of highly preferred criteria is required.
  • Education:
  • No formal education requirements.
