Job Description

We are looking for a Sous Chef to join our team at Cultivate Food Rescue. This full-time position requires skilled culinary expertise and involves the administration of the Chef’s daily food production plan. You will work with staff and volunteers to execute food production, kitchen safety, sanitation, and organizational routines. The food production supports Cultivate’s K-12 frozen meal backpack program and other nonprofit event needs as scheduled.

As the Sous Chef, you will have the opportunity to make a difference in the community while working in a more suitable schedule compared to traditional culinary roles. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Production of high volume, large batch cooking.
  • Proper food handling procedures, cooling times, methods, and food temperatures.
  • Excellent knife skills and advanced knowledge of culinary arts.
  • Menu development, flavor profiles, and plate concepts.
  • Developing creative batch recipes using an ever-changing inventory of rescued and donated food products.
  • Producing nutritional, balanced meals and following a zero waste approach.
  • Planning and supporting occasional special events, menu planning, and food production.
  • General facility and equipment maintenance, cleaning, sanitizing, and trash removal.
  • Supervision and direction of staff and volunteers.
  • Participating in food rescues.

This position primarily operates Monday through Friday, with occasional evenings and weekends. The physical demands include lifting merchandise up to 50 lbs, standing for extended periods, and working in sub-zero freezers.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of a high school diploma, 2+ years of professional culinary experience, and a track record of reliable employment. An associate's degree in culinary arts and Serve Safe Manager Certification are preferred.
