Job Description

Job Objective: To ensure that food is prepared and ready at scheduled times and assist in serving meals from the serving line.

Essential functions:

  • Supervise kitchen helpers, assigning duties as required during absence of Kitchen Supervisor.
  • Schedule kitchen workload to allow for timely meal preparation, serving and clean-up, as well as adequate beneficiary services.
  • Bi-weekly inventory of all unused items.
  • Plan menus and order food consistent with nutritional rehabilitation and budget constraints.
  • Cook and prepare food as needed, working alongside beneficiary staff when necessary.
  • Consult with professional staff concerning beneficiary services.
  • Keep the Resident Supervisor and/or Director of Rehabilitation Services informed of staffing needs.
  • Maintain a high degree of cleanliness and order in the kitchen.
  • Ensure all personnel on shift understand the need for personal hygiene and appropriate clothing.
  • Wear any assigned PPE provided, including gloves, masks, or back guard when doing substantial lifting.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited food service program.
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience in institutional cooking with some management responsibilities.
  • Valid Driver’s License and ability to drive in accordance with the Salvation Army policy is preferred.

Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to speak, write, and understand English for effective communication.
  • Basic computer skills including payroll program usage.
  • Ability to use basic math skills.
  • Good speaking, hearing, vision ability, and excellent manual dexterity.

Supervisory Responsibility: Directly supervises one employee in the kitchen and beneficiaries assigned to the kitchen for work therapy. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with The Salvation Army’s policies and applicable laws.

Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands, handle, or feel; and hear or talk. The employee is frequently required to walk and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; and stoop, kneel or crouch. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.

Travel: May be required to travel to various locations for work or training.

Working Conditions: The work environment for this position is in a kitchen environment with a moderate noise level. The environment may experience temperature fluctuations based on weather and is frequently warm and humid.
