Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Dietary Cook to join our culinary team in our long-term care setting. In this role, you will be responsible for preparing nutritious, appetizing, and well-balanced meals for our residents in accordance with dietary restrictions, preferences, and specific medical needs. The ideal candidate will have a passion for cooking, a commitment to quality food service, and an understanding of the unique dietary requirements in a long-term care environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Meal Preparation: Prepare and cook high-quality meals according to the facility's menu plan, ensuring that meals are nutritious, flavorful, and meet the dietary needs of the residents, including specialized diets (e.g., diabetic, low-sodium, gluten-free, pureed).
  • Food Safety and Sanitation: Maintain a clean and safe kitchen environment, adhering to all food safety guidelines, sanitation standards, and infection control procedures. Ensure proper food handling, storage, and temperature control.
  • Dietary Compliance: Follow dietary guidelines provided by physicians, nutritionists, and the facility's dietary team. Ensure that meals meet the specific nutritional needs and preferences of each resident, including allergies or other medical restrictions.
  • Menu Planning Support: Assist in menu planning, making suggestions for seasonal meals, special events, or modifications based on resident feedback and dietary requirements.
  • Portion Control: Ensure appropriate portion sizes are adhered to, and food is served at the correct temperature and in an aesthetically pleasing manner.
  • Inventory Management: Assist with ordering and stocking of food and kitchen supplies, ensuring proper inventory levels. Monitor food expiration dates and assist with rotating stock to reduce waste.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with the Dietary Manager, Registered Dietitians, and other healthcare team members to meet residents' dietary needs and ensure excellent food quality and service.
  • Special Events & Holidays: Participate in the preparation and presentation of meals for special occasions, themed events, and holidays to enhance the dining experience for residents.
  • Resident Interaction: Be attentive to resident preferences and dietary needs, providing high-quality service that contributes to the overall well-being and satisfaction of the residents.

Qualifications:

  • Education/Experience: High school diploma or equivalent required. Culinary or dietary cook certification is preferred but not required. Minimum of 1–2 years of experience in a dietary or food service role, preferably in a healthcare or long-term care setting. Experience working with therapeutic diets and food preparation for elderly populations is a plus.
  • Skills: Knowledge of food safety and sanitation guidelines (ServSafe certification is preferred). Ability to follow recipes and meal plans accurately. Strong attention to detail and ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment. Excellent communication and teamwork skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Compassionate, patient, and respectful of the elderly.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to stand for long periods, lift up to 25–50 lbs, and perform tasks requiring dexterity and strength in a kitchen environment.

Additional Requirements:

  • Must pass a criminal background check and drug screening.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays as needed.
