Job Description

We are looking for a Cook to join our team at MorningStar Senior Living. This position is full-time with a starting pay rate of $18.00 per hour. The cook will be responsible for the preparation, cooking, seasoning, and serving of adequate, attractive, nutritious, and balanced meals, including meat, fish, fowl, vegetables, fruit, soups, salads, desserts, breads, and pastries, as specified and scheduled by the menus.

In this role, you will handle and prepare food that is palatable, appetizing, and attractive while complying with meal schedules. You will follow standard recipes but also make independent decisions based on your experience. It is essential to understand the importance of proper food-handling techniques and the hazards of improper food handling.

Responsibilities include:

  • Estimating quantities of food required and apportioning servings while monitoring portion-controlled guidelines for individual residents.
  • Preparing foodstuffs for cooking by peeling, washing, trimming, and cutting vegetables and fruits; washing, cutting, deboning, and trimming meat, fish, and fowl.
  • Tasting, smelling, and observing food to ensure conformity with recipes and appearance.
  • Serving food according to dietary guidelines, checking each tray for completeness and accuracy.
  • Cooking food by baking, roasting, stewing, and steam-cooking meats, fish, and fowl, basting as necessary to retain flavor; making gravies, stocks, dressings, sauces, and soups.
  • Preparing cold meats, sandwiches, griddle cakes, cooked cereals, and beverages.

To qualify, candidates should demonstrate core values of Love, Kindness, Honesty, Goodness, Fairness, and Respect. A high school diploma is preferred, and at a minimum, the ability to read and write in English is required. Previous experience in the dietary department of a health care facility is preferred.

Team members scheduled to work 24 or more hours per week are eligible for benefits, and their families will also be eligible.
