Job Description

Cook/Dietary Aide

Independently responsible for preparing meals for regular and modified diets using the cook/chill method of food production. This role coordinates food preparation and meal services, monitors tray line activities, and instructs lower-grade employees in food service methods and techniques. The successful candidate will prepare, season, cook, and serve meals using both fresh and frozen ingredients. Cooking methods include baking, grilling, frying, stewing, roasting, broiling, and sautéing. The candidate will evaluate the condition of cooked food and monitor the temperature of hot and cold food throughout preparation and service, and prepare meals for therapeutic and special diets. As needed, the position requires driving a car, box truck, or van to deliver food within the department. Daily mandatory documentation and general housekeeping tasks are also required.

RESIDENCY PREFERENCE AMENDMENT ACT OF 1988

  • Applicants for positions in the Career Service, Educational Service, Management Supervisory Service, line attorney positions in the Legal Service (series 905), or attorney positions in the Excepted Service (series 905) who are bona fide District residents at the time of application may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the applicant declines the preference points.
  • If selected, the successful applicant will be required to present proof of bona fide District residency and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of appointment.
  • Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

This position is in a collective bargaining unit and may require an agency service fee through automatic payroll deduction.

Position Designation: This position is deemed “Safety Sensitive” pursuant to Section 410 of Chapter 4 of the D.C. Personnel Regulations. In addition to the general suitability screening, applicants for or occupants of safety sensitive positions are subject to the following checks and tests:

  • Criminal background check
  • Traffic record check (as applicable)
  • Pre-employment drug and alcohol test
  • Reasonable suspicion drug and alcohol test
  • Post-accident or incident drug and alcohol test
  • Random drug and alcohol test
  • Return-to-duty or follow-up drug and alcohol test

Appointment Duration: Permanent

Tour of Duty: Rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays are required.

Minimum Education Requirement: A high school diploma or a certificate of equivalency (GED) is required.

Licensures, Certifications, and Other Requirements:

  • Valid Food Hygiene Certificate (such as ServSafe)
  • Valid DC Department of Health Food Protection Manager ID Certification
  • Valid driver’s license

Work Experience: Thorough knowledge of food preparation principles, techniques, and procedures in a healthcare dietary setting is required.

Work Environment: The position involves working in a controlled environment with some exposure to moderate risk of accidents. Basic safety precautions are required.
